Blur messages

A privacy extension for WhatsApp Web

Your colleague walks past. Your screen is shared on a call. Wanova frosts over the names, previews and photos in WhatsApp Web so nobody nearby can read them — while you still see enough to work. Hover to clear one chat; a hotkey blurs everything.

Free on every plan · nothing sent anywhere · off by default

The moment

WhatsApp Web has no “peek” protection

On your phone you can hide message previews. On the desktop, your whole conversation list sits there in plain text — names, last lines, everything — for anyone standing behind you.

The open-plan desk

A shared office, a coffee shop, a seat on the train. WhatsApp Web is up because you use it for work — and every client name in the sidebar is legible from two seats away.

The screen share

You're presenting and forgot WhatsApp was open on the second monitor. A preview slides in mid-call. Blur means the worst case is a frosted bar, not a headline.

The person at home

Sometimes the screen you're guarding is at the kitchen table. Blur is on your side of it, and it turns off as fast as it turns on.

How it works

Frost the sensitive bits, keep the app usable

Not a black rectangle over the whole window. A blur on exactly the parts that give things away, with the structure left intact so you can still work.

Choose what blurs

Four independent switches: contact names, profile photos, message text and previews, and images. Turn on the ones that matter to you — names and previews by default, media if you want it. Timestamps and layout stay sharp.

Hover to reveal one

Move your cursor over a chat and just that one sharpens, then frosts back over when you leave. You read the conversation you need without unveiling the other twelve on screen.

One key for all of it

Someone appears at your shoulder — Ctrl+Shift+Y (Cmd on Mac) frosts the whole thing instantly, and the same keys bring it back when they've gone. Adjust the blur strength to taste.

This is the most private thing Wanova does, precisely because it does so little: it's a CSS blur painted over the page in your own browser. Nothing is sent, nothing is stored, nothing changes for the person you're chatting with. There's simply nothing here to leave your machine.
Two different privacies

Blur is about your screen. Stealth is about your signals.

People mix these up, so here's the line: one hides what's on your display from people near you, the other stops WhatsApp broadcasting your activity to the people you chat with.

Blur — inward

Frosts names, previews and photos on your screen so the person behind you can't read them. It changes nothing about what you send or what others see. Free, local, instant. That's this page.

Free on every plan

Stealth — outward

Stops the signals WhatsApp sends on your behalf: read receipts, “typing…”, your online status, the played mark on a voice note. That's a different feature, and it's on every plan too.

While you're here

You blur it because you work in it

The reason WhatsApp Web is open all day, legible from across the room, is that it's where your customers are. Wanova is built for exactly that — living inside it, all day.

Needs you 3
AKAhmed K.4d silent
MRMaria R.2h waiting
CWChen W.promised

It knows who's still waiting

Who went quiet after a quote, what you promised and when — worked out from the chats you already have, on your machine. The same extension that frosts your screen also makes sure you don't drop the thread.

And catches what they delete

“This message was deleted” stops being the end of it — Wanova keeps a private copy as messages arrive, photos and voice notes included. Also local, also yours.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What exactly gets blurred?

Whichever of four things you choose: contact names, profile photos, message previews and text, and images. Timestamps and the layout stay sharp, so the app is still usable — you can see that a chat is active without anyone being able to read who it's with or what it says. Names, avatars and previews blur by default; media is optional.

How do I read a message when I need to?

Hover over a chat or a bubble and it clears just that one, then re-blurs when you move away — so you can read a single conversation without exposing the rest of the screen. There's also a hotkey, Ctrl+Shift+Y (Cmd+Shift+Y on Mac), that toggles the whole blur on and off in one keystroke.

Does this send anything anywhere?

No. It's purely a visual layer painted over WhatsApp Web in your own browser — a CSS blur, nothing more. It doesn't touch your messages, doesn't change what you send, and involves no server and no network. It's the most private feature we have, because there's nothing to leave your machine.

Does the other person know I've blurred my screen?

No. Blurring only affects what's drawn on your own display. It sends no signal, changes nothing on their end, and is invisible to everyone but the person looking at your screen — which is the whole point.

Is it free?

Yes. Blur is on every plan, including the free trial, and it isn't locked behind an upgrade. It's off until you switch it on.

Is this the same as hiding my online status?

No — they're opposite directions. Blur hides what's on your own screen from people near you. Hiding your online status stops signals going out to the people you chat with. You might want both, but they solve different problems.
